    Steve,

Naperville is outside of the range but I’d think with 50 watts and a good mobile antenna inside of Montgomery, Oswego, or Yorkville it might be possible.

I’m going to have my wife try from the base station at my house since she’s not coming (Too hot). – Montgomery.

    Thanks!

    Okay,

Quick update here. At this point we have about 21 people. SO, planning for 25 people at this point if others show up without RSVPing.

I am going shopping today/tomorrow to get burgers, brats and hot dogs. Dave (WRKF682) is bringing his specialty as well! 😊 If anyone wants to bring anything, as I said before please bring a side dish, snacks or deserts!

The mobile repeater will be brought with and installed at about 40 feet all things willing and it’ll have a DB404 antenna on it running at the full 50W output. As mentioned, the tone will be 141.3 – traveler tone. 462.575 +5 (Channel 16)

Sometimes you get lucky…. This is one of those times with the mobile repeater I’ll be putting in Friday evening at my camp site… This coverage is insane at only 40 feet…. All things considered including crappy LMR400 line loss and duplexer loss… Andrews DB404 antenna… 867 feet above sea level sure helps… MAN ALIVE!! http://rugged575.com/shabbona_portable/RM8DF2931D7ACC_0_.html

With that being said we should have fantastic on-prem local repeater coverage!

Thanks!! Yeah, that receive only antenna setup at the very top sure helped! Without the help of all the other repeater owners it wouldn’t be this good! Corey got me set up with a tuned receiver filter and buddy stopped by on his way back to Greencastle to help install it and it’s been insane ever since! 🙂

    Thanks again!

A quick update and a *BIG HUGE* thanks to Dave – WRKF682 for meeting me out at Lake Shabbona on Monday to do a little RF testing. A few observations we have determined while we were out there:

    — This park is HUGE so simplex is fine around the camp site or at the main group but with all the trees a 5W HT will struggle and we tested it with limited success.
    — Rugged 575 (unlinked) and Grundy 700 (linked) both cover the entire park no issues on mobile radios but depending on where you are at on an HT, it’s hit or miss due to the terrain and trees! For example, HT’s work loud and clear on both repeaters near the water and at the group spot but hit/miss in the deeper loop camping spots.
    — As such, I will be bringing a full duty, non-linked commercial repeater system with. I’ve been itching to install one with a massive collapsible mast on my truck for a while now anyways so this is a good excuse to finally put that together! It’ll be run from the rugged truck and will be a full 50 watts on GMRS channel 16 – 462.575 with a commercial Andrews dipole antenna. The tone for this repeater for the duration of this event will be the traveler tone of 141.3. I hope this is enough time for everyone to get their radios programmed!! This repeater will be great for use all around the park and then some and will be on for the duration of the trip! Feel free to share the tone with any and all valid GMRS users. As it will only be about 30 feet tall and temporary the coverage will be only about 5 miles anyways!

    Thanks!

Update: I talked to Dave – WRKF682, and he is going to bring his flat top propane grill and we are working on some tasty ideas for an even better late lunch/early dinner on Saturday. At this point we do not need anyone to bring any extra grills to the group area (outside of what you want for your camp site of course). If/when the group going gets bigger I will reach out and see who else could volunteer another grill.

    Thanks!

@Arturo Alcantar – WRKY284, Which nights are you staying on those 2 camp spots?

I have updated my notes but I’m still keeping track of all numbers due to COVID restrictions. Once I have that answer I’ll post an update on here with who’s coming.

@JB, thanks again for bringing wood! This will be very helpful! 🙂

    Thanks!

Omg! I love hammerachlaggen!! I have a dedicated small hand sledge for it (the handle is a bit maimed as to be expected) and I prefer concrete nails instead of 16 pennies!

Jay, if you can muster up a giant stump of wood I’ll bring bring hammer and 10 pounds of nails!!

    Thanks!

LOL! I was referring more to the fact that you’ll stay up way too late and party….

See picture attached to the main loop. If we all wanna camp in the same area that’s our choice. That and the other loop is totally booked!! THe other option is the main road but I’d think if we’re all in the loop that would be fun!

Are you *SURE* you wanna camp next to me Jay??? hahahaha,

My site I booked is number 93 in the Merganser loop. I believe it’s number 94 that’s right next to the bathroom which I specifically avoided as they are out-houses. You can put 2+2 together on that I’m sure.

Either way I wanted book in that loop because I didn’t want to be on the main strip heading east towards the lake because it gets a LOT of traffic as it’s the main road (I learned this from being there last year). My kids know not to go near cars but why be on the main strip is my point.

    Thanks!

Thanks Jay! I was just thinking, man it’s about time to update radios! This list is remarkable!

Now begins the ruthless process to figure out what I have and add more…

Maybe I’ll just nuke the list and start over… UHG.
